These handmade necklaces come from Colombia. They are made of vegetable ivory (Tagua in Spanich). The Tagua is found in ivory palms (Phytelephass) in Tropical America (the Amazon jungle).
The Phytelephass palms grow in dense and shady forests between 300 and 1200 metres in altitude. We find it at the heart of Amazon jungle, in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and other countries all around the world where it has been introduced.
When the flowers are blooming, they emit a suave smell which spreads all around the land. Before ripening, the fruit of these palms contains a sweet milk that Indians like a lot. Then, this albumen hardens and becomes vegetable ivory.
